How to change the world without trying

I have a confession to make: I am lazy af.

I’m embarrassed to report that it has been two days since I last showered, I haven’t brushed my hair or teeth this morning (apologies to my dentist) and I am literally wearing what I went to bed in. Yes, like Beyoncé, I indeed woke up like this, but this isn’t pretty.

As someone who finds it hard enough to keep up with the basics of good hygiene and presentation, I find that getting behind a good cause can sometimes be exhausting.

Whether it’s running, starving, going alcohol free or growing a moustache, I just can’t commit to anything that requires some form of effort (particularly the moustache).

Enter social enterprises.

Social enterprises are businesses that trade with the intent to tackle social problems. These businesses use the majority of their profits (at least 50%) to work towards a chosen mission: be it social, environmental, cultural or economic.

In Australia there are an estimated 20,000 social enterprises making a real impact both domestically and globally. And for lazy girls like myself, these businesses provide us with a super easy way to make the world a better place.

By simply swapping the existing products we use with the exact same products made by social enterprises we can make a lasting impact. Here are three basic changes you can make to help change the world.

SWAP YOUR REGULAR BOTTLED WATER TO THANKYOU WATER

While 663 million people around the world don’t have access to safe water, the global bottled water industry continues to bring in billions of dollars every year. The team at Thankyou though this was downright stupid, and decided to use the latter to tackle the former. If you purchase a bottle of Thankyou water, you actually help fund water, sanitation and hygiene programs in low-income countries.

According to Thankyou, they have helped fund water and sanitation services for 545,360 people (as of February 2017), with that number growing daily. Their range has since expanded to food and body care ranges as well. Find out more here.

SWAP YOUR REGULAR TOLIET PAPER FOR WHO GIVES A CRAP TOLIET PAPER

It’s hard to believe that 2.3 billion people (roughly 40% of the world’s population) don’t have access to a toilet. This crappy statistic (see what I did there?) led to the creation of Who Gives A Crap toilet paper in 2012, and since then the social enterprise has been donating 50% of its profits to non-profit organisations like WaterAid to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries.

For every roll of toilet paper you buy from Who Gives A Crap, you help to provide someone with access to a toilet for roughly one week. To date they have donated $478,500 to help fund hygiene and sanitation projects. Purchase Who Gives A Crap toilet paper here.

SWAP YOUR SANITARY PRODUCTS FOR TSUNO SANITARY PRODUCTS

To every woman, everywhere, periods suck. However, for women living in developing countries, they are more than just a monthly inconvenience. Millions of girls can miss up to 20% of the school year, simply because they don’t have access to feminine hygiene products. And for these girls, education is everything.

According to Tsuno’s charity partner, One Girl, the longer a girl is educated, the greater the benefits. For every year a girl stays in school, her income can increase 10-20%, she’s less likely to be sold into marriage, and more likely to have a smaller, healthier family.

If that’s not worth swapping over for, it’s also worth noting that Tsuno products are better for the environment and us ladies using them too. Made from bamboo (one of the most eco-friendly and sustainable fibres) not viscose, no harsh chemicals are needed to process them. It’s a win-win. You can purchase Tsuno products here.
